The air in the abandoned church hung thick with the scent of decay and something else, something ancient and cloying, like roses left too long to rot. Dust motes danced in the slivers of moonlight that pierced the stained-glass windows, each shard a fractured echo of a forgotten saint. Jeff shivered, pulling his worn jacket tighter. He hated places like this, places that whispered of secrets and held their breath waiting for something to happen. It reminded him too much of home, before. Before everything went to hell.

Issac sat on the crumbling altar, his silhouette stark against the faint glow seeping from the cracked roof. He was quiet, too quiet. The restless energy that usually crackled around him, the nervous twitch of his fingers, the way his eyes darted to every shadow – it was all muted, replaced by a stillness that felt heavier than any silence. He was trying to be strong, Issac always tried to be strong, but Jeff could see the cracks, the hairline fractures in his brother’s carefully constructed composure.

"So," Jeff began, his voice raspy, "what's the plan, genius? We gonna, like, commune with the holy ghosts for a miracle? Maybe ask ‘em if they’ve seen a really pissed-off ancient vampire with a penchant for melodrama?"
