The air in the cramped attic room was thick with the stale scent of old paper and the lingering ghost of cheap cigarettes. Rain lashed against the grimy windowpane, each drop a tiny, insistent drumbeat against the fragile silence. I watched Jeff’s chest rise and fall, a shallow, ragged rhythm that did little to soothe the gnawing anxiety in my gut. He was asleep, or pretending to be, his face pale and drawn in the dim light cast by a single, flickering bulb. It was a familiar tableau, one we’d played out countless times in dingier rooms and on colder nights, but this time, the stakes felt impossibly higher.

“You’re thinking about her, aren’t you?” Jeff’s voice was a low murmur, barely disturbing the quiet. He didn’t open his eyes, but I knew he was awake. He always knew.

I let out a slow breath, the air catching in my throat. “Just… wondering what else she’s got planned. Feels like we’re running in circles, man.”
