The stone of my cell was cold against my cheek, a stark contrast to the fever that seemed to burn within me. Each breath was a struggle, not from lack of air, but from the sheer weight of my own confusion. Duty. It was a word etched into my very bones, a guiding star that had never wavered. I was Elara, the slayer, the one who cleansed the world of the creatures that preyed on the innocent. Valerius was my quarry, the apex predator, the king of shadows. It was the unexpected gentleness in his touch when he’d bound my wounds, the raw vulnerability that had flickered in his eyes when he’d spoken of loneliness, a concept I’d never associated with a creature of his power.
