Chapter 17
Silas's Revelation
Silas uncovers a forgotten truth about Valerius and his past encounter. This revelation could be the key to Elara's freedom, or it could plunge them all into deeper peril.
The chill that had settled into my bones since my capture had nothing to do with the ancient stone of Valerius's castle. It was a deeper, more insidious cold, born from the slow erosion of my resolve, the gnawing doubt that had taken root in the fertile darkness of my captivity. Each passing day felt like another layer of my slayer's identity being stripped away, replaced by something softer, something that flinched at the thought of Valerius's absence. It was a terrifying transformation, one I fought with every fiber of my being, yet my efforts felt increasingly futile, like a child trying to hold back a tidal wave with cupped hands.
My cell, once a symbol of my defeat, had become a strange sort of sanctuary. The iron bars, a constant reminder of my prisoner status, also served to keep the suffocating intensity of Valerius’s gaze at bay, at least for a few precious hours each night. He visited often, his presence a palpable force that filled the small space, his voice a silken threat, a seductive whisper that chipped away at my defenses. He spoke of his ancient lineage, of the world as he saw it, a tapestry of fleeting mortal lives and eternal, shadowed existence. He never demanded my submission, not overtly. Instead, he offered glimpses of a different kind of power, a power that didn't rely on brute force or the cold steel of my blade. He offered… understanding. And that was far more dangerous.
Seraphina, Valerius’s second, remained a constant shadow at the periphery of my existence. Her eyes, sharp and discerning, followed my every move whenever I was permitted outside my cell, her loyalty to the King a palpable barrier between us. She saw my struggle, I knew she did. She saw the flicker of something other than hatred in my gaze when Valerius spoke, and her disdain for me deepened with each passing day. Her presence was a constant reminder of the world I was meant to inhabit, a world of righteous fury and unwavering purpose. Yet, even her icy disapproval couldn’t shake the growing unease within me.
