Chapter 13
A Ghost from the Past
Silas, haunted by a past failure involving Valerius, decides to intervene. He seeks out old knowledge, unaware of the dangerous secret he carries that could impact Elara's fate.
The chill that seeped into Silas’s bones was not from the biting wind whipping through the skeletal trees outside his secluded cabin. It was the cold, gnawing dread that had been his unwelcome companion for years, a shadow cast by a memory he’d tried to outrun. The memory of Valerius. And of Elara, so achingly like the girl he’d failed before. He ran a calloused thumb over the worn leather of an ancient tome, its pages brittle with age, its script a forgotten tongue. He was searching for a weakness, a forgotten incantation, anything that might grant Elara an edge against the King of Night.
He’d seen the signs, subtle shifts in her dispatches, a hesitation in her typically terse reports that spoke volumes. Elara, his Elara, was faltering. Not in her skill, never in her skill, but in the steel of her resolve. He remembered the haunted look in her eyes the last time they’d spoken, a flicker of something akin to… fascination. It was a dangerous spark in the dry tinder of Valerius’s world.
He’d sent her away from the castle, a flimsy excuse about needing to gather more intelligence. It was a lie, of course. He needed to buy time. Time to find a way to sever the silken threads Valerius was weaving around her. He needed to remind her of what she was fighting for, and what she stood to lose.
