Chapter 12
Seraphina's Gambit
Sensing Elara's weakening resolve, Seraphina sees an opportunity. She subtly manipulates events, hoping to exploit Elara's feelings and sow discord between her and Valerius, or perhaps eliminate her.
The velvet of the night pressed in, thick and cloying, a shroud woven from the very essence of this cursed castle. Days had bled into a disorienting haze since Valerius had dragged me from the snow-choked pass, my defiance a brittle thing now, shattered against the unyielding stone of his domain. My cell, once a stark reminder of my captivity, had become something else entirely—a gilded cage, its bars woven with whispers and the unsettling scent of my captor. He visited, of course, his presence a storm that brewed in the dim light, his eyes, those ancient pools of crimson, dissecting me with an intensity that both repelled and ensnared. He spoke of freedom lost, of duty’s cold embrace, and each word was a silken thread, spun to bind me tighter.

A flicker of something akin to… vulnerability? It was gone as quickly as it appeared, replaced by the familiar, predatory gleam, but I had seen it. And the sight had lodged itself beneath my skin, a tiny shard of doubt in the edifice of my hatred.
“You grow accustomed to your surroundings, Slayer,” Valerius’s voice, a low rumble, broke the silence. He lounged against the heavy oak door, a silhouette against the faint moonlight filtering through the narrow window. His gaze was fixed on me, a hawk watching its prey, yet there was a strange softness in its depth that I struggled to reconcile with the monster I knew him to be.
