The air in the makeshift infirmary was thick with the metallic tang of old blood and something else, something acrid and unsettling that clung to the back of the throat. Dr. Aris Thorne watched Lena Petrova as she meticulously cleaned a wound on Zach’s arm, her movements economical, almost practiced. Zach, still pale and drawn, flinched occasionally, his eyes darting around the room as if expecting something to spring from the shadows. Oliver lay on a cot nearby, his breathing shallow, a faint tremor running through his limbs. The silence between them was a heavy blanket, woven with unspoken questions and a gnawing dread.
“He’s stable,” Lena said finally, her voice low, devoid of inflection. She met Thorne’s gaze, her own a hard, assessing blue. “As stable as anyone can be in this hellhole.”
Thorne nodded, a familiar ache settling in his chest. He’d seen too many ‘stable’ people unravel in these walls. “And Zach?”
