The air in the makeshift infirmary hung thick with the metallic tang of dried blood and a more recent, acrid scent like burnt ozone. Zach, still pale and trembling, clutched a worn blanket, his eyes darting between the sterile white of the walls and the darker, more ominous shadows that seemed to writhe in their corners. Oliver lay beside him, his breathing shallow, a faint tremor occasionally rippling through his limbs. Dr. Aris Thorne, his face a mask of grim determination, meticulously cleaned a set of surgical instruments, each click and scrape a punctuation mark in the heavy silence. Lena, her arms crossed, stood by the doorway, her gaze fixed on Thorne, a silent sentinel of unease.

"It's not enough, Aris," Lena's voice, though low, cut through the quiet like a shard of ice. "We can't just… contain it here. Not when it's already touched Zach. Touched Oliver."

Thorne paused, his hand hovering over a scalpel. He looked at Zach, then at Oliver, his expression a complex tapestry of regret and resolve. "Containment was always the first step, Lena. The *ideal* first step. But the anomaly… the consciousness… it's evolved. It's learned. And it's found a new vector." He gestured vaguely towards Zach.
