He stood in the makeshift command center, a repurposed laboratory still bearing the faint scent of antiseptic and despair, the flickering emergency lights casting long, dancing shadows that played tricks on the eye. Oliver remained in stasis, a silent, unnerving testament to the unknown forces at play.

“We’re running out of time, Aris,” Lena’s voice was a low murmur, laced with an urgency that matched Thorne’s own. “Every minute we spend debating is a minute the ‘thing’ gains ground.”

Thorne nodded, his jaw tight. The ‘thing’. It was the only way he could conceive of it now, this insidious consciousness that had wormed its way into their reality.
