The air in the cavern was thick with the scent of damp earth and something else, something metallic and sharp, like old blood. Kaelen moved through the gloom, a phantom in the perpetual twilight. His boots crunched on loose scree, each sound a deliberate whisper against the oppressive silence. For months, this had been his world – a labyrinth of jagged rock and unseen horrors, a stark contrast to the blinding white cities and golden spires he’d glimpsed only once, a lifetime ago.
Then, he heard it. A soft, hesitant sound, unlike the guttural cries of the cave-dwellers or the skittering of things best left unseen. It was a human sob.
