The air in the cavern was thick with the scent of damp earth and something else, something metallic and sharp, like old blood. Kaelen moved through the gloom, a phantom in the perpetual twilight. His boots crunched on loose scree, each sound a deliberate whisper against the oppressive silence. For months, this had been his world – a labyrinth of jagged rock and unseen horrors, a stark contrast to the blinding white cities and golden spires he’d glimpsed only once, a lifetime ago.

Then, he heard it. A soft, hesitant sound, unlike the guttural cries of the cave-dwellers or the skittering of things best left unseen. It was a human sob.

He froze, every nerve ending screaming caution. His power, the terrifying erasure he wielded, had kept him alive, but it had also carved a chasm between him and the world he’d known. He was a hunter now, a creature of the void, and the scent of vulnerability was a siren song to predators. Yet, something in the fragile sound tugged at him, a ghost of the boy he used to be.
