Chapter 3

Episode 3

The sterile scent of bleach and something vaguely metallic, a smell Rene was beginning to associate with both dread and a strange sort of exhilaration, filled her nostrils. She stood at the edge of the tape, her eyes, wide and a little too bright, scanning the scene. It was a small apartment, the kind where the walls seemed to whisper secrets even when no one was there. A single, overturned lamp lay on the floor, casting long, distorted shadows that danced like phantoms.

"Anything, Rene?" Sergeant Miller's voice, gruff but not unkind, cut through the humming silence. He was a mountain of a man, his uniform straining at the seams, and Rene found his solid presence oddly reassuring, a bulwark against the swirling anxieties that often threatened to engulf her.

Rene swallowed, her throat suddenly dry. "It's… it's quiet," she managed, her voice a little shaky. "Too quiet." She scanned the room again, her gaze snagging on a faint smudge near the baseboard. Her heart gave a little lurch. It looked like… a shoe print. But not just any shoe print. It was too small, too delicate. A woman's shoe.

"Too quiet?" Miller grunted, his brow furrowed. "Place looks like a tornado went through it. And the vic's not exactly sleeping soundly." He gestured towards the chalk outline on the worn rug, a stark white ghost against the faded floral pattern.

Rene nodded, her eyes still fixed on the smudge. Her mind, a tireless engine of suspicion, was already spinning. Who would wear such delicate shoes to commit a crime like this? Someone trying to be stealthy? Or someone who didn't *expect* to get their shoes dirty? The possibilities, each more sinister than the last, began to bloom.

Suddenly, her phone buzzed. A text from Deon. "BABE! U wil NOT beleve ths. The pigeon in the park is WHISPERING my name. It knows things. I think it’s a spy for the government. Gotta go. LOVE U!"

Rene sighed, a small, fond smile tugging at her lips. Deon. Her Deon. Always on the edge of something extraordinary, or something utterly bizarre. She typed back, "Be safe, my love. Don't let the pigeons get you. I love you too."

She turned back to the crime scene, the faint smudge still drawing her attention. It was more than just a smudge. It was a clue. And her paranoia, that ever-present companion, was whispering that this little clue was connected to something much, much bigger. The apartment might be quiet, but Rene felt a storm brewing, and she was standing right in the eye of it. She crouched down, her gloved fingers hovering inches above the floor. This was her job now. This was her calling. And even if her mind sometimes played tricks on her, it also saw things others missed. Like the faint shimmer of glitter clinging to the edge of the smudge. Glitter. Interesting. Very, very interesting.
