Outside his dorm room window, the usual campus hubbub – distant shouts, the rumble of a passing skateboard – seemed muted, a world away. Inside, a different kind of quiet hummed, a nervous energy that vibrated through Liam’s fingertips as he traced the rim of his mug. Maya. Her name echoed in the stillness, a soft, insistent melody that had woven itself through the fabric of his days.
He’d replayed their conversations a hundred times, dissecting her words, her laughter, the way her eyes crinkled at the corners when she was truly amused. She saw him, he was sure of it. Not just the diligent student, the quiet observer, but Liam, the person wrestling with ghosts he’d desperately tried to outrun. And that was the terrifying, exhilarating precipice he stood on now.
Chloe had been right, of course. Her pragmatic advice, delivered over lukewarm coffee in the student union, had been a necessary jolt. “Liam, you’re going to overthink this into oblivion,” she’d said, her brow furrowed with concern. “She likes you. It’s obvious. You just have to… say something. Anything.” But ‘anything’ felt like a monumental task when ‘something’ involved unraveling the carefully constructed walls he’d built around his heart.
