The velvet cloak of night had settled over their little house, pricked with the diamond dust of a million stars. Elara, nestled beside her mother on the porch swing, traced the familiar constellations with a fingertip. The Big Dipper, Orion’s Belt, the faint shimmer of the Milky Way – they were old friends, comforting in their constancy. Yet, tonight, a new kind of constellation seemed to be forming in Elara’s mind, a swirl of questions that felt both exhilarating and a little bit dizzying.

“Mom?” she began, her voice soft, barely disturbing the quiet hum of crickets. “If the universe is so big, and so old, and there are so many stars… could there be… other moms? And other Elaras? Out there, looking at their own stars?”

Aurora’s heart gave a gentle flutter. This was it, the kind of question that made her pause, that made her reach for the wisdom she hoped she possessed. She looked at her daughter, her bright eyes reflecting the starlight, her brow furrowed in earnest contemplation. Aurora felt the familiar tug of responsibility, the instinct to provide a definitive answer, a neat package of knowledge. But the previous night’s conversation, the one where she’d admitted to not knowing everything, still echoed in her mind.
