The silence in the flat was a physical thing, a heavy blanket that pressed down on Maria’s chest, making each breath a conscious effort. Gary was gone. The door had closed behind him with a soft click, a sound so insignificant, yet it echoed like a gunshot in the cavernous emptiness he’d left. Maria stood rooted to the spot, her gaze fixed on the closed door, as if willing it to reopen, as if willing the words he’d spoken, the truth he’d finally, agonizingly, confessed, to simply vanish.

But they wouldn’t vanish. Lou. The name itself was a bitter taste on her tongue, a phantom limb of betrayal that suddenly throbbed with new, raw pain. Gary’s confession, delivered in a rush of choked words and averted eyes, had been a tidal wave, sweeping away the carefully constructed dam of her defenses. She’d known, of course, hadn’t she? There had always been a shadow lurking in the corners of their life, a whisper of things left unsaid, of actions Gary had taken that he couldn’t quite explain away. She’d told herself it was just his way, his ingrained habit of trying to protect her, of shielding her from the grittier realities of his world. But this… this was different. This was a deliberate withholding, a lie woven into the very fabric of their shared history.

Maria finally moved, her feet carrying her to the window, her hands clenching and unclenching at her sides. The street below, usually a comforting tapestry of everyday life, now seemed alien, the familiar faces and passing cars a stark contrast to the maelstrom inside her. She saw her own reflection in the glass, a woman etched with a weariness that went deeper than sleepless nights. Her eyes, usually so bright and full of life, were now shadowed, haunted. A slow, cold dread began to seep into her bones, chilling her to the core.
