William sat in the sterile departure lounge, the hum of the airport a dull thrum against his temples. Rita, bless her impulsive heart, had been unusually quiet since they'd boarded, her usual chatter about the latest pop sensation replaced by a thoughtful gaze out the window. He knew what was weighing on her. The conversation they'd had before leaving, the one about Gary, about Maria, had clearly struck a chord. He’d tried to shield his daughter from the uglier truths of the world, but Rita, with her grandmother’s fierce spirit, had a knack for sniffing out injustice.

He found himself drifting, too, back through the years. Not to the bright, sun-drenched days of his youth, but to the shadows. Rose. The name was a bitter taste in his mouth. Alan, his father, had always been a man of few words, especially about Rose. A closed chapter, he’d called it. But William remembered the whispers, the hushed arguments, the fear that had coiled in his gut. He'd been so young, too young to understand the magnitude of what was happening, but old enough to feel the tremors of a life unraveling. The attempted murder of William Jake Hill. The words still sent a shiver down his spine. Annie, Vicky – his sisters. He’d barely known them then, a ghost of a family fractured by secrets he was only now beginning to piece together. And Rose, their mother, arrested. It was a story he’d tried to bury, a narrative too painful to revisit. But now, with Rita’s innocent concern for Maria, the past was clawing its way back, demanding to be heard. He looked at his daughter, her brow furrowed in concentration, and a fierce protectiveness surged through him. He wouldn’t let history repeat itself. He wouldn’t let Gary Windass inflict the same kind of pain on Maria that Rose had, in her own way, inflicted on his family. He would make sure Rita understood that some lines, once crossed, could never be uncrossed.
