Chapter 18
Rebuilding or Letting Go
Maria contemplates the future, weighing the pain of the past against the potential for a healthier, more trusting relationship.
The air in the flat, usually a comforting hum of domesticity, now felt thick, heavy with unspoken words and the lingering scent of Gary’s confession. Maria stood by the window, her gaze fixed on the familiar street below, but her mind was a whirlwind, replaying every syllable Gary had uttered. Lou. The name itself was a small, sharp stone in her gut. She’d heard it before, of course, in hushed tones, in the periphery of Gary’s life, but never with the weight of his admission. He hadn't just known Lou; he had actively participated in something that had festered for years, a secret he’d carried like a shard of glass.
And now, it was out. The truth, raw and jagged, lay between them. Maria’s hands clenched at her sides, her nails digging into her palms. She felt a tremor run through her, a visceral reaction to the revelation. It wasn't just the act itself, though that was bad enough, but the years of deception. The carefully constructed facade he’d presented, the man she thought she knew, had crumbled in an instant.
She turned, her eyes finding Gary across the room. He sat hunched on the sofa, his face a mask of weary regret. He looked so pathetic, so utterly defeated, and a part of her, the part that loved him, ached for him. But that ache was quickly drowned out by a rising tide of anger. How could he? How could he have kept this from her, from them? Her children. Her family. The very people she guarded with a ferocity that surprised even herself.
