The confession hung in the air between them, thick and suffocating, a tangible thing that had seeped from Gary’s lips and now coiled itself around Maria’s heart. She stood by the window, her knuckles white where she gripped the sill, the familiar view of Coronation Street a blurred canvas of muted greys and greens. The words, once spoken, had taken on a life of their own, twisting and morphing in the quiet aftermath, each syllable a tiny shard of glass embedding itself deeper with every passing second. Lou. The name itself was a dull throb, a ghost from a past she hadn't known existed, a past that Gary had carefully, meticulously, kept hidden.

Maria was sad, confused, hurt, vengeful, and just about every other emotion a human being could muster. The kaleidoscope of feelings swirled inside her, a tempest that threatened to tear her apart from the inside out. Sadness for the years of deception, for the innocence she had unknowingly harboured, for the vulnerability Gary had exploited. Confusion, a gnawing disorientation, as she tried to piece together the fragments of Gary’s fractured narrative, to understand the ‘why’ behind his actions, the true extent of their entanglement. Hurt, a sharp, visceral pain that radiated from her chest, a betrayal so profound it felt like a physical blow. And then, the vengeful spark, a flicker of righteous anger that began to ignite, fueled by the years of walking on eggshells, of questioning his every move, of that nagging intuition that he was keeping something from her.

She turned from the window, her gaze fixing on Gary. He stood in the middle of their living room, a figure etched in shadows and regret, his shoulders slumped, his eyes downcast. He looked so utterly broken, so defeated, and a part of her, the part that loved him, ached to reach out, to offer solace, to mend the pieces of him that seemed to be crumbling before her. But the other part, the part that felt the sting of deception, the part that had been blindsided, recoiled. That part remembered the lines she had drawn in the sand, the unspoken promises she had made to herself, to her children, to protect them from the fallout of his secrets.
