Chapter 10
Whispers of the Past
The details surrounding Lou and Gary's past wrongdoing begin to surface, adding layers to Maria's distress.
The words hung in the air between them, heavy and suffocating, like the damp wool of Gary’s old jacket. Maria stared at him, her eyes wide, trying to piece together the fractured narrative he’d just laid bare. Lou. The name itself felt like a phantom limb, a ghost from a past she’d thought long buried, a past Gary had only ever alluded to in hushed, guilty tones. But now, the hushed tones had escalated into a confession, a cascade of admissions that chipped away at the foundations of their shared life.
It wasn't the fact that something had happened, not entirely. Maria knew Gary’s history wasn’t pristine. She’d seen the shadows in his eyes, glimpsed the guilt that sometimes coiled in his gut. But the details. The specifics of what he’d done, the impact it had had, the years he’d kept it a secret – that was the venom now seeping into her veins. He’d spoken of Lou with a strained earnestness, a desperate attempt to convey the weight of the burden he’d carried, but to Maria, it sounded like a justification, a flimsy shield against the enormity of his deception.
She felt a tremor start deep within her, a seismic shift that had nothing to do with the rumbling of the Coronation Street traffic outside. It was an internal earthquake, a violent upheaval of every certainty she’d held about Gary, about them. Sadness, a deep, aching sorrow for the man she thought she knew, washed over her first. It was followed swiftly by confusion, a disorienting fog that blurred the edges of reality. Then, the hurt. Oh, the hurt was a physical blow, a sharp, stabbing pain that stole her breath. It was the hurt of knowing she’d been lied to, of knowing the man she loved had harboured such a significant secret, a secret that had clearly shaped him in ways she was only just beginning to comprehend.
