The air crackled with a tension that had been building for months, a low hum beneath the surface of our second year at Cora Amauta. It was late November, the Cair Raymi festival still a vibrant memory, but the joy of revelry had been overshadowed by the looming threat we’d unearthed. The creature, this enigmatic being we’d come to tentatively call the ‘Umbrafang’ for its shadowy form and the chilling sound it sometimes made, was no longer just a rumour or a fleeting glimpse. Its presence was a palpable weight, a shadow cast over the very foundations of our magical school.
We stood in the heart of the ancient grove, the one whispered to be the school’s original nexus of power, a place we’d only recently confirmed the Umbrafang guarded. Moonlight, usually a soft benediction, now seemed to dissect the clearing, casting sharp, unforgiving shadows. Ayani, her brow furrowed, traced a symbol on a moss-covered stone with a fingertip dusted in luminescent powder. “It’s not just protecting the grove,” she murmured, her voice barely a whisper. “It’s *bound* to it. This place is its purpose.”
Emiliano, his usual boisterous energy subdued, shifted his weight, his hand instinctively going to the pouch of protective charms at his belt. “So, it’s like a magical guard dog? But way cooler, and way scarier.”
