The air thrummed with a joyous energy, a stark contrast to the knot of unease tightening in my stomach. Cair Raymi, the summer solstice festival, was in full swing, painting Cora Amauta in a riot of vibrant colors and intoxicating scents. Lanterns, woven from sun-kissed reeds and imbued with gentle light, bobbed in the twilight breeze, casting dancing shadows across the cobblestone courtyards. Laughter, like the tinkling of tiny bells, echoed from the Great Hall, where students and faculty alike mingled, their faces flushed with celebration and the heady aroma of roasted fruits and spiced mead.

Ayani, her usually serene expression alight with a smile, braided a garland of luminous moonflowers, their silvery petals shimmering in the dimming light. Emiliano, ever the enthusiastic participant in any festivity, was attempting to juggle glowing orbs of light, his efforts resulting in more near-misses than successful catches, much to Santiago’s amusement. He sat beside me on a low stone bench, a mischievous glint in his eyes as he watched Emiliano’s antics.

“He’s going to set his beard on fire again, isn’t he?” Santiago whispered, nudging me with his elbow. “Remember last year’s Inty Raymi? The Great Hall smelled like burnt sugar and singed eyebrows for weeks.”
