The air in the library, usually a comforting blanket of old paper and dried ink, felt thin and sharp tonight. Dust motes danced in the lone beam of light slanting from a high window, illuminating the gnawed edges of ancient tomes and the skeletal remains of forgotten research projects. We were sprawled around a heavy oak table, the silence punctuated only by the rustle of pages and the occasional sigh of frustration. It had been days since we’d stumbled upon that faded symbol, the one that snagged at the edges of my memory like a burr. It was the mark of the *coyote cepa*, or at least, a crude echo of it, scrawled on the underside of a loose floorboard in the abandoned wing.

“I just don’t get it,” Emiliano muttered, running a hand through his already disheveled hair. He’d been trying to decipher a particularly dense passage on elemental resonance for the past hour, his brow furrowed in concentration. “If the *cepa* is dismantled, and has been for years, why would their symbol show up now? And why here, in Cora Amauta?”

Ayani, ever the picture of calm, traced the intricate lines of a rune etched onto a worn leather cover. “The dismantling of an organization, especially one as deeply entrenched as the *coyote cepa* was, rarely eradicates its influence entirely. Remnants, echoes, even dormant cells can persist. This symbol, if it truly is theirs, suggests something has reawakened.” Her voice was soft, but the weight of her words settled heavily in the room.
