“Anything?” Ayani’s voice was a low murmur, her fingers tracing the intricate patterns on a tome bound in what looked suspiciously like scaled hide. Her brow was furrowed in concentration, her usual calm demeanor stretched taut.

I shook my head, frustration prickling at my skin. “Nothing. I’ve cross-referenced every bestiary, every bestiary of obscure magical fauna. There’s no mention of anything that matches our… visitor.” My voice trailed off. Even saying it felt absurd. What *was* it? A shadow that moved with unnatural speed, a whisper of claws on stone, a pair of eyes that glowed with an unsettling, primal intelligence.
