Chapter 9
Thorne's Interrogation
Inquisitor Thorne begins his investigation, questioning Zamia directly. Her evasiveness only fuels his suspicion, tightening the net of his inquiry around her.
The air in Zamia’s workshop, usually thick with the comforting scent of dried herbs and simmering tinctures, felt heavy, cloying, like a shroud. It was a stillness that spoke not of peace, but of anticipation, a coiled spring ready to uncoil with violent force. The afternoon sun, which had been struggling to pierce the grimy panes of her small window, now seemed to falter entirely, casting long, distorted shadows that danced like specters across the cluttered stone floor. Zamia, her hands instinctively smoothing the rough linen of her apron, felt a prickle of unease crawl up her spine. She had learned to read the subtle shifts in the city’s atmosphere, the hushed whispers that could portend ruin, the sudden silences that followed the clang of a guard’s boot. And this silence, this oppressive quietude that had settled over her usually boisterous street, was a warning.
The heavy oak door, a barrier she usually guarded with a practiced vigilance, was suddenly thrown open with a force that rattled the vials on her shelves. The sound was a violation, an intrusion into the sanctuary she had so painstakingly cultivated. Framed in the doorway stood a man whose presence seemed to suck the very warmth from the room. Inquisitor Thorne. His robes, the somber black of a crow’s wing, were impeccably clean, a stark contrast to the usual grime of the city and a testament to his unwavering dedication. His face, a harsh landscape of sharp angles and shadowed hollows, was set in an expression of grim determination. His eyes, the color of storm clouds, fixed on Zamia with an unnerving intensity, as if he could already see the secrets she held buried deep within.
“Mistress Zamia Rene?” His voice was a low rumble, devoid of any pleasantry, like stones grinding together. It held an authority that demanded an immediate and absolute response.
