Duke Armand, Lady Isolde's betrothed, notices the change in his fiancée. He confronts Zamia, suspecting foul play and demanding answers about the potion's unnatural influence.

The air in Zamia’s workshop hung thick with the cloying scent of dried herbs and the metallic tang of simmering liquids. Dust motes danced in the single shaft of moonlight that pierced the gloom, illuminating the precarious stacks of alembics and mortars. It was a sanctuary, a place where the mundane laws of the city held no sway, replaced by the more ancient, potent forces she coaxed from root and petal. Tonight, however, the familiar comfort felt brittle, like a thin layer of ice over a deep, dark current.

The chime of the bell above her door, usually a hesitant whisper announcing a furtive client, was sharp, insistent. Zamia’s breath hitched. No one came to her door unannounced in the dead of night unless they bore ill intent. Her fingers, stained with the residue of countless concoctions, tightened around the pestle she’d been grinding valerian root with. The rhythmic thudding of the mortar ceased.

A shadow detached itself from the deeper darkness of the alleyway outside. It resolved into the imposing figure of Duke Armand, Lady Isolde’s betrothed. His face, usually a mask of aristocratic ennui, was etched with a raw, unfamiliar desperation. His fine velvet cloak, usually immaculate, was damp and clinging, as if he had run through the recent, unseasonable downpour. He strode into the workshop without invitation, his boots echoing on the stone floor, each step a thunderclap against Zamia’s frayed nerves.
