The air in Zamia’s small laboratory, usually thick with the comforting scent of dried herbs and simmering tinctures, now held a sharp, metallic tang, like a storm brewing just beyond the horizon. Dust motes danced in the single shaft of moonlight that pierced the gloom, illuminating shelves crammed with vials, jars, and the skeletal remains of forgotten experiments. Zamia, her brow furrowed in concentration, hunched over a worn leather-bound tome, its pages brittle with age and stained with the residue of countless inquiries. The cryptic symbols and archaic script swam before her eyes, a labyrinth she was determined to navigate.

Lord Valerius’s commission, the one that had promised a handsome sum and a swift resolution, had instead unspooled into a knot of disquiet. The Crimson Bloom potion, meant to ensnare Lady Isolde’s affections, had done more than merely pique the lady’s interest. Whispers had reached Zamia’s ears – hushed conversations in the marketplace, furtive glances exchanged in shadowed alcoves – of Isolde’s sudden, almost desperate infatuation, a feverish devotion that bordered on obsession. It was a passion too intense, too sudden, to be the natural bloom of affection. It felt… manufactured. And the source of that manufactured fervor, Zamia now suspected, lay within the peculiar, iridescent petal she had sourced for the concoction.
