Zamia’s breath hitched, a ragged sound lost in the cacophony of panicked shouts and the distant clang of steel. She had not intended for it to come to this. The crimson bloom potion, envisioned as a gentle nudge, a subtle whisper in the ear of affection, had instead erupted into a tempest. Her masterwork, her carefully balanced concoction, had become a volatile force, its supposed enchantment twisted into something wild and unpredictable.

Lord Valerius’s desperate plea, whispered in the shadowed alcove of her laboratory, had been for a love that burned, a passion that consumed. She had warned him, hadn’t she? It was fear, it was rage, it was a primal, unreasoning panic.
