The midday sun beat down on the market square, a relentless golden hammer forging the air into a shimmering haze. The usual cacophony of vendors hawking their wares, the bleating of sheep, and the boisterous laughter of patrons at the ale stalls was abruptly silenced, replaced by a chilling hush that spread like frost across the cobblestones. At its epicenter stood Zamia, her heart a frantic hummingbird trapped within her ribs. She clutched her satchel, the worn leather a familiar comfort, yet today it felt like a flimsy shield against the storm gathering around her.

Inquisitor Thorne, his black robes a stark silhouette against the bright square, stood before her, his face a mask of righteous fury. His eyes, sharp and piercing as a hawk’s, seemed to bore into her very soul, as if he could see the illicit secrets swirling within her. Beside him, a contingent of guards, their armor glinting, formed a menacing semi-circle, their presence amplifying the dread that coiled in Zamia’s stomach.

“Zamia Rene,” Thorne’s voice boomed, cutting through the silence like a sharpened blade. “You stand accused of practicing forbidden arts, of dabbling in the dark sorcery that poisons the hearts and minds of the innocent.”
