The air in Zamia’s small laboratory, usually thick with the comforting scent of brewing herbs and the metallic tang of alchemical reagents, was now heavy with a different, more suffocating odor: fear. It clung to the stone walls, seeped into the very mortar, and coiled itself around Zamia’s heart like a serpent. Inquisitor Thorne stood before her, his shadow cast long and distorted by the flickering lamplight, a silhouette of righteous fury against the backdrop of her life’s work. He held a small, intricately carved wooden box, its surface worn smooth by countless hands, and Zamia’s breath hitched. She knew that box. It was one of the many she kept hidden, containing components far too volatile, far too *unconventional*, for the eyes of the pious.

"You recognize this, alchemist?" Thorne’s voice was a low rumble, devoid of any warmth, like stones grinding together. His eyes, sharp and unwavering, bored into her, dissecting her very soul. The silver crucifix he wore glinted menacingly against the dark fabric of his cassock.

Zamia’s hands, usually steady as they measured and mixed, trembled. She clasped them behind her back, trying to hide the tell-tale tremor. "I confess, Inquisitor, I do not. My trade is in the healing arts, the humble remedies for common ailments. Such… peculiar boxes are not part of my repertoire." The lie tasted like ash on her tongue, a bitter counterpoint to the sweet scent of lavender still lingering from a recent calming draught.
