Zamia confronts Lord Valerius, demanding to know his true intentions. He reveals his ambition to control Isolde and, through her, her family's influence and wealth.
The air in Zamia’s hidden workshop, usually thick with the comforting scent of dried herbs and simmering elixirs, felt heavy with unspoken accusations. Dust motes danced in the single shaft of moonlight that pierced the gloom, illuminating the tension that coiled between her and Lord Valerius. He stood before her, his silken tunic a stark contrast to the rough-hewn stone of her sanctuary, his expression a mask of cool amusement that did little to soothe the unease churning in her gut.
“You demand to know my intentions, alchemist?” Valerius’s voice was a low purr, laced with an arrogance that grated on Zamia’s nerves. He circled a worn wooden table, his gaze sweeping over the vials and alembics as if measuring their worth. “Are they not plain enough? I desire Lady Isolde. And you, with your peculiar talents, are the key to unlocking her affections.”
Zamia clasped her hands together, her knuckles white. “Desire is a fickle thing, my lord. It can be a fleeting spark or a raging inferno. The potion I brewed for you… it was potent. More potent than I anticipated. And the whispers I hear, the tremors in the city’s underbelly, they speak of a love that is not born of genuine affection, but of something far more… consuming.” She met his gaze, her own sharp and unwavering. “What is it you truly seek, Lord Valerius? For a noble such as yourself to commission such a… specialized concoction suggests a motive beyond mere courtship.”
