The air in Zamia’s laboratory hung thick with the scent of dried herbs and simmering distillates, a familiar perfume that usually soothed her. Tonight, however, it felt cloying, the shadows in the corners of the cramped space seeming to deepen and writhe with an unseen life. She hunched over a bubbling retort, her brow furrowed in concentration as she meticulously measured a pinch of powdered moonpetal. The delicate, iridescent dust shimmered in the dim lamplight, a testament to its rarity and the treacherous journey required to procure it. Her hand instinctively reached for the heavy pestle resting on her workbench, its smooth, cool surface a familiar comfort.

The door swung inward with a groan, not with the brute force of a burglar, but with a calculated, almost hesitant pressure. The lamplight from her workspace spilled into the hallway, illuminating a figure silhouetted against the dim glow. Zamia’s heart hammered against her ribs, a frantic drumbeat against the encroaching silence.
