Chapter 4

Wind Tunnel: Reality Check and Refinement

The team brings their curved-box aero prototype to the wind tunnel. Early runs validate much of the simulation data, but reveal new challenges: the adaptive flare at the rear wing exit needs further tuning for variable wind conditions. Marcus pushes for a direct comparison with the conventional wing. Ben improvises a rapid test-swappable mount, allowing side-by-side data acquisition. Anya analyzes live flow data, finding subtle inefficiencies at high yaw. The team identifies actionable refinements, but the session ends with Marcus proposing a full-scale dynamic test—raising the stakes for the next phase.

The wind tunnel’s low hum built as the model locked into place, a full-scale representation of the car’s rear assembly with the new curved-box aero concept. The chamber doors sealed, lights flickered, and Ben adjusted the remote cameras to capture every angle. Anya stood by the control station, headset on, eyes fixed on the live data stream. Marcus, notebook in hand, occupied his usual post behind the glass.

The first run began—a controlled 180 kilometers per hour, steady headwind. Colored smoke revealed smooth, arched ribbons streaming down each side pod, feeding the rear wing and diffuser. On the pressure monitors, numbers aligned closely with predictions: downforce was up, drag stayed low, and the airflow clung tightly to the curves. Anya’s satisfaction was visible in the tight focus of her expression.

But, as Marcus had insisted, the real test wasn’t the steady state. "Bring up the crosswind," he called through the comm. The technician dialed in a lateral gust. Instantly, the feedback monitors flickered: a slight separation appeared at the rear wing’s expanding flare, the smoke thread breaking into a faint spiral. There was no catastrophic loss—just a visible inefficiency, a drop in the overall downforce number that the simulation had hinted at but not fully captured.
