The whispers had begun weeks ago, insidious tendrils of unease snaking through the city’s underbelly, from the gas-lit alleys of the French Quarter to the mist-shrouded cypress swamps that guarded its periphery. Something was stirring, something that prickled at the ancient instincts honed over centuries of reign.

Isabelle, her most trusted lieutenant, stood a respectful distance away, her gaze unwavering, a silent sentinel against the encroaching shadows. Her loyalty was a palpable thing, a shield forged in shared bloodlines and countless skirmishes. Yet, even Isabelle’s stoic composure seemed strained tonight, a subtle tension in the set of her jaw, a fleeting flicker in her usually resolute eyes.

“The reports from the lower wards are… unsettling, my Empress,” Isabelle began, her voice a low murmur that barely disturbed the profound quiet. “The mortals are growing bolder, their superstitions reanimated. And among our own… a restlessness. A questioning.”
