The humid New Orleans night pressed close, a velvet cloak woven with the scent of jasmine and something wilder, something Katja recognized from centuries past. She walked, a queen in her own right, through the gaslit streets, her retinue of loyal guards a silent, formidable presence. Beside her, Henri de le Couer moved with an unsettling grace, his eyes, dark pools reflecting the flickering lamps, seemed to hold a knowledge that stretched beyond the present moment. It was surreal, this stroll through her beloved city, a city she had built from whispers and shadows, and yet, a disquieting familiarity clung to the air, a phantom limb of memory.

Then it happened. A stumble, a near collision with one of her guards, a tall, imposing figure whose gaze was as steady as the ancient oaks of her homeland. Henri’s hand shot out as if to steady himself, his dark eyes meeting the guard’s for a fleeting second. “Excuse moi, kind Sir,” he murmured, his voice a silken apology, but then his brow furrowed, a flicker of confusion crossing his handsome face. “I… I spoke out of turn. I was mistaken. I had thought you were someone else.”

Katja froze, her heart, a thing of ancient stone, gave a peculiar lurch. The guard, a loyalist named Armand, merely inclined his head, his expression impassive, but Katja saw it – a subtle tensing of his jaw, a barely perceptible widening of his eyes. The guard, “someone else”? Who could Henri have possibly mistaken Armand for? A dream from a different time, a different place, was beginning to coalesce in the humid air, a whisper of a forgotten passion, a ghost of a love that had once burned so fiercely, threatening to consume her all over again. The words hung between them, charged with an unspoken history, a chilling echo of a forbidden union, a young prince held captive, and a princess forced to flee.
