Chapter 8
Kira calls Josh about the morning message. He comes over, drives her to the police station to file a protective order, and they have lunch. On returning home, Kira receives texts revealing William knew the order was denied. As they sit in the car, a figure across the street points at her, and Kira dials 911 while Josh approaches.
Kira pressed the phone to her ear and waited. The line clicked. “Josh?” she said, her voice thin.
“Kira? What’s wrong?” He sounded awake, alert. She could hear wind in the background, as if he were outside.
She told him about the message. About the figure in the dark, the wave, the patrol cars and how he had seen her sleep. Her words tumbled out, and she didn’t bother to slow them.
