Chapter 7
After receiving a text that reveals William knows her route home, Kira and Carol check the car and phone for trackers with no success. William then sends a message confirming he saw them check, and a figure watches the house. Police search but find no one. Kira insists on going to work the next morning to not let William win. She wakes to a message saying he watched her sleep, then calls Josh in fear.
Carol took the phone from Kira’s hand and stared at the screen. Her face paled, but she didn’t speak. She simply turned and walked into the kitchen. Kira heard her dialing, her voice low and controlled as she asked for Officer Delgado.
Kira stayed on the couch, hugging a throw pillow. The message glowed in her memory: You take a different way home. Smart. But I always know where you are. He knew. He had seen them, or guessed, or tracked her phone. The thought made her stomach clench.
A few minutes later, Carol returned. “She’s on her way. She said to stay put and keep everything locked.”
