Kira wakes from a restless night and goes to work, where she reports William's text to Emily. William arrives at Coastal Communicators, and in a meeting he asks personal questions before purchasing the premium security package. Despite the sale, Kira is unsettled. At home, she receives a new text from William, indicating he intends to stay in contact.
The clock on the nightstand read 3:14 a.m. when Kira finally drifted into an uneasy sleep. She woke with a start, the gray light of dawn filtering through the curtains. Her phone lay face-down on the pillow beside her. She reached for it, heart hammering, but there were no new messages. The text from last night still glowed on the screen: See you tomorrow, Kira.
She showered and dressed slowly, her mind churning. Her mother was already in the kitchen, pouring coffee. “You’re up early,” Carol said, her voice warm. “Couldn't sleep?”
“A little nervous about work,” Kira said, taking the mug her mother offered. The lie felt thin, but she wasn't ready to explain the unease that had taken root.
