Kira, Josh, Carol, and Detective Renfro arrive at the police station. Renfro announces Diane Marlow has been located. A text from William confirms he is watching. Then an officer reports that Kira's ex-boyfriend Brian Taylor is at the front desk asking to see her. Kira's phone buzzes with a final message: 'Surprise.'
The car hummed along the back roads, the tires humming against the asphalt. Kira sat in the back seat with Josh beside her, his hand resting on hers. Carol was in the front passenger seat, her gaze fixed on the road ahead. Louise had stayed behind, insisting she would lock up and wait for news.
Detective Renfro drove with her eyes darting between the rearview mirror and the road. “We’ll take the long way. Avoid the main streets.”
Kira’s phone sat dark on her lap. She hadn’t looked at it since the last message. She didn’t want to see another one. But the silence of the device felt just as threatening.
