After the TRO is signed, Kira and her family return to Louise’s house with police escort. They spot the blue sedan from earlier, but it's empty. A new text from William raises the stakes. Renfro receives security footage revealing the sedan was rented by a woman named Diane Marlow, who appears in the video with William Rainor. The chapter ends with the knowledge that the threat is larger than one man, leaving Kira and the others bracing for what comes next.
The words hung in the air like smoke. Kira’s fingers tightened around the phone, the screen dimming as she read the message again. Now it’s personal. She looked up at Renfro. The detective’s expression was unreadable.
“What does that mean?” Carol’s voice cracked. She stepped closer to Kira, her hand brushing her daughter’s arm. “Is he going to—?”
“He’s trying to scare you,” Renfro said. “Don’t let him. We’ve got the TRO request in the system. The judge is reviewing it now. If we get the signature, he can’t come within a hundred yards of you without risking arrest.”
