Chapter 12
Kira, her family, and Josh wait through the night as William stands outside the house. As sunrise approaches, a text from William warns time is almost up. Three knocks come at the door, followed by William's voice demanding to talk. Kira decides to step toward the door.
The words hung in the air like smoke. Josh let the curtain fall back into place, his jaw tight. Carol stood by the kitchen doorway, phone in hand. Aunt Louise had gone rigid beside the grandfather clock.
“He’s just standing there,” Josh said. “Under the oak.”
Kira looked at her phone again. The text glowed on the display: I’ll give you until sunrise to come outside and talk to me. Then I’ll knock.
