Chapter 1
Chapter 1
Elena Vance learns from her panicked brother, Mark, that he has stolen millions from the Salvatore crime family and has offered her as payment. Dante 'The Reaper' Salvatore arrives at their apartment, cold and menacing, to claim her. Despite her defiance, Elena is taken away, and the chapter ends with her realizing the terrifying new reality she has entered.
The evening had started like any other. Elena Vance sat at the small kitchen table, a half-empty mug of tea growing cold beside her laptop. She was reviewing spreadsheets for the nonprofit she worked for, trying to stretch every dollar to help the families who relied on them. The soft glow of the screen was the only light in the cramped apartment, and the hum of the city outside was a familiar lullaby.
She didn't hear the key in the lock. The door swung open, and Mark stumbled in, his face pale and slick with sweat. His eyes were wild, darting around the room as if he expected someone to jump out from the shadows.
"Elena. Ella, thank God you're here."
She stood, concern immediately pushing aside the annoyance at being interrupted. "Mark? What's wrong? You look like you've seen a ghost."
He didn't answer. Instead, he grabbed her shoulders, his grip too tight. "Listen to me. I need you to pack a bag. Just a small one. You're going away for a while."
"What? No. I have work tomorrow, and—"
"There's no time!" His voice cracked, a desperate edge that made her blood run cold. "I messed up, Ella. I messed up so bad."
She pulled back, studying his face. Mark was always the charming one, the one who laughed off trouble with a wink and a smile. But there was no smile now. Just terror.
"What did you do?"
He ran a hand through his hair, pacing in front of her. "I—I took something that wasn't mine. From some people. Bad people."
"How much?"
"Does it matter? I can't pay it back. I can't." He stopped abruptly, grabbing her hands. "But I can give them something else. You."
Elena froze. "What?"
"They want collateral. Something valuable. I told them I had you."
Her heart hammered against her ribs. "You told them you had me? Mark, I'm not a thing you can trade!"
"I know, I know! But I didn't have a choice! If I don't pay, they'll kill me. And you're all I have. You're the only thing of value."
The words hung in the air, ugly and sharp. Before she could scream at him, a heavy knock rattled the door.
Mark flinched. "They're here."
"Don't open it."
"I have to."
He moved toward the door, and Elena grabbed his arm. "No. We can call the police. We can—"
"The police can't help. These people own the police." He pulled away and unlocked the deadbolt.
The door swung open, revealing two men in dark suits. They stepped aside, and a third man entered. He was tall, with broad shoulders that seemed to fill the doorway. His face was chiseled, cold, with eyes the color of winter storms. He wore a perfectly tailored black suit, and his presence sucked the warmth from the room.
This must be Dante Salvatore. The Reaper.
Elena had heard whispers about him, about the things he did to people who crossed the Salvatore family. She had never imagined she would be standing in his shadow.
His gaze swept the apartment, dismissing it, until it landed on her. He studied her with a clinical detachment, as if she were a piece of merchandise he was appraising. A shiver ran down her spine, but she refused to look away.
"You must be Elena." His voice was low, smooth, with a hint of an old-world accent. "I've heard a lot about you."
"I doubt anything good."
A slight tilt of his head. "Your brother speaks very highly of you. He says you're his most prized possession."
"I'm not a possession."
"That's not for you to decide."
Mark stepped forward, wringing his hands. "Mr. Salvatore, she's—she's everything I said. She's smart, she's beautiful, she's worth a lot. She can work off the debt."
Elena's stomach churned. "Mark, stop it."
Dante ignored him, his eyes fixed on her. "You'll come with me. Now."
"No." She squared her shoulders, even though every instinct told her to run. "I'm not going anywhere with you."
"You don't have a choice."
"I have every choice. You can't just kidnap me."
"Your brother signed a contract. You are the collateral. Legally, you belong to me until the debt is paid."
"That's not how the law works!"
He smiled, but it didn't reach his eyes. "I don't operate under your law."
He stepped closer, and she backed up until her legs hit the table. He was so close she could smell his cologne—something expensive and faintly like cedar. His hand came up, and he brushed a strand of hair from her face. The touch was light, but it made her skin crawl.
"You're a fighter," he murmured. "Good. That will make this more interesting."
"I'll never stop fighting you."
"I wouldn't expect you to." He stepped back and gestured to the door. "Let's go."
She looked at Mark, who had the decency to look ashamed. "I'm sorry, Ella. I'm so sorry."
"You're a coward."
He flinched but didn't deny it.
Elena knew there was no point in screaming. The neighbors wouldn't help; they knew who lived in the building. She would have to survive this and find a way out later. She grabbed her purse and walked toward the door, head high.
The men flanked her as she stepped into the hallway. Dante led the way, his footsteps echoing on the linoleum. They didn't take the elevator; instead, they went down the stairs, the flickering lights casting long shadows.
A black sedan waited at the curb. One of the men opened the back door, and Dante gestured for her to get in.
"After you."
"Charming."
She slid across the leather seat, and he followed, settling beside her. The door clicked shut, sealing her in a space that suddenly felt too small. She pressed herself against the far door, putting as much distance as possible between them.
The engine purred to life, and the car pulled away from the curb, leaving her old life behind. She watched the familiar streets blur past, the neon signs of the city fading into the darkness.
"You're very quiet." Dante's voice cut through the silence.
"I have nothing to say to you."
"That's fine. You'll have plenty of time to talk later."
She turned to face him, her anger simmering. "What do you want from me?
"Your brother owes me millions. Until he pays it back—or until I decide your value is sufficient—you remain with me."
"And if I refuse?"
"You won't."
"You can't keep me prisoner."
"Watch me."
He said it so calmly, so matter-of-factly, that she believed him. She had walked into the lion's den, and the door was closing behind her. But she was not going to be a lamb for the slaughter. She would find a way out. She had to.
The car turned into a gated driveway, and the iron gates swung open to reveal a sprawling estate. The house was modern, all glass and steel, lit up like a beacon against the dark sky. It looked less like a home and more like a fortress.
"Welcome to your new home," Dante said, a hint of amusement in his voice.
Elena stared out the window, her hands clenched in her lap. He thought he had won. He thought he could break her. But he didn't know her. He didn't know how far she was willing to go to reclaim her freedom.
As the car stopped, she took a deep breath. The game had only just begun.
And she intended to win.
