Kaelen's Shadow

The name Kaelen was not spoken aloud in the Hidden Sanctuary. It was a shadow, a hiss, a phantom that clung to the edges of conversations, always just out of earshot, always just beyond the flickering lamplight. Elara had heard it first from Silas, a low murmur, a warning etched in the lines around his eyes. Now, Lyra’s voice, usually so bright, was strained as she repeated it, the sound catching in her throat.

“Kaelen,” Lyra breathed, her fingers tracing patterns on the worn wooden table. “He believes this world... this city... is broken. He wants to ‘reset’ it.”

Elara leaned forward, the air in their small, clandestine meeting room suddenly feeling thick and heavy. The perpetual twilight outside seemed to press in, mirroring the gloom settling over her heart. “Reset it? What does that even mean?”
