The air in the hidden sanctuary thrummed with a palpable tension, a stark contrast to the usual hum of whispered conversations and the soft glow of Lumina-crystals. Elara traced the intricate patterns on the ancient stone table, her fingers brushing against a faint, cool vibration. Silas stood beside her, his brow furrowed, his gaze fixed on the flickering projection of a city map spread across the surface. Lyra, her usually bright eyes shadowed with worry, sat opposite them, her hands clasped tightly in her lap.
“The Heartstone,” Silas murmured, his voice a low rumble that seemed to echo the unease settling in Elara’s chest. “That’s what he’s after.”
The projection shifted, zooming in on a point deep beneath the city’s oldest district, a place Elara had only ever heard spoken of in hushed tones – the Rooted Core. It was the city’s literal heart, a nexus of energy that sustained the perpetual twilight, the subtle hum of life, and perhaps, even the strange abilities that pulsed within some of its inhabitants.
