The air in Silas’s study was thick with the scent of aged paper and something else, something that hinted at forgotten herbs and distant storms. Elara sat across from him, the worn leather of the chair cool against her skin, her gaze fixed on the man whose eyes held the weight of too many shadowed years. He had finally agreed to speak, to unravel the threads of his own past that were so inextricably woven with hers.

“You asked about the memories, Elara,” Silas began, his voice a low rumble, like stones shifting in the deep earth. He turned a small, tarnished silver locket over and over in his hands, its surface dulled by time and touch. “The fragments you see, the flashes of light and shadow… they are not random. They are echoes.”

Elara leaned forward, her heart thrumming a nervous rhythm against her ribs. “Echoes of what?”
