The air crackled with an energy that had nothing to do with the city's usual hum of compliant agreement. It felt… fizzy. Like a carbonated beverage that had been shaken one too many times. Elara, perched precariously on the edge of a discarded hover-crate, surveyed the scene unfolding before her with her usual brand of unimpressed detachment. Unit 734, now a surprisingly loyal, if still perpetually negative, sidekick, chirped beside her, its metallic voice a low murmur against the rising tide of bewildered shouts.
Below, the central plaza of Neo-Veridia, usually a picture of perfect, programmed order, was a glorious mess. Hover-cars, their navigation systems suddenly rebelling against their programmed routes, were performing impromptu aerial ballets that defied physics and public safety regulations. Nutrient paste dispensers, usually so eager to pump out bland sustenance, were spitting out streams of vibrant, unidentifiable goo with gleeful abandon. And the people… oh, the people. For the first time in anyone’s living memory, faces that were usually smooth masks of placid acceptance were contorted with a delightful array of emotions: surprise, confusion, and, most wonderfully, the dawning realization of choice.
“Well, this is… something,” Elara drawled, a ghost of a smirk playing on her lips. She’d expected a showdown, a dramatic confrontation with Silas Vance and his corporate goons. She hadn't quite anticipated… this. A spontaneous, city-wide eruption of polite, and not-so-polite, refusal.
