Lyra stood at the edge of the clearing, her fur bristling not with fear, but with a resolute determination that belied her small frame. Before her, a contingent of cats from the Outer Wastes, their metallic collars glinting under the muted sun, stood in a disciplined formation. At their head, Kaelen, his gaze sharp and assessing, met her stare. His sleek, dark fur was marred by faint scorch marks, a testament to the skirmishes that had already begun to scar their once-tranquil home.
“Kaelen,” Lyra’s voice, though clear, carried a tremor of the emotion churning within her. She had practiced this moment a thousand times in her mind, rehearsing words of peace, of reason, of shared heritage. But standing here, facing the embodiment of the invasion, the words felt fragile. “You cannot continue this. This valley is not yours to take.”
Kaelen offered a short, humorless chuckle. “Survival, little valley cat, is not a matter of courtesy. Your abundant resources are a lifeline to our dying lands. We simply claim what we need.” His voice was a low rumble, laced with a pragmatism that chilled Lyra to the bone. He truly believed this.
