The heavy velvet of the throne room drapes seemed to absorb all sound, muffling the usual rustle of courtiers and the distant murmur of the city. It was a silence I had cultivated, a stillness born not of peace, but of a carefully orchestrated void. My father, King Theron, sat slumped on the grand throne, his usual regal bearing diminished by the creeping illness that had finally claimed him entirely. His breaths were shallow, rattling like dry leaves against parchment. His once vibrant eyes, now clouded with an almost childlike trust, flickered towards me as I approached.

"Fayette," he rasped, his voice a mere shadow of its former strength. He gestured with a trembling hand towards the empty seat beside him. "Come, child. Your counsel is all I have now."

I moved with deliberate grace, the silk of my gown whispering against the polished marble. Each step was a testament to years of silent study, of poring over forbidden texts in the deepest recesses of the royal library, while my tutors prattled on about treaties and trade agreements. They saw a diligent princess, eager to learn the art of diplomacy. They never saw the truth etched in the margins of their lesson books, the diagrams of siege engines, the meticulously detailed accounts of conquered cities.
