Chapter 8
The Seeds of Chaos
From her new position, Fayette observes the subtle tremors of discord she has sown. The carefully constructed vulnerabilities in neighboring kingdoms begin to show, a chilling promise of her coming reign.
The velvet of the throne room felt cool beneath my fingertips, a stark contrast to the feverish anticipation coiling in my gut. Outside, the sun, a pale disk in the muted Verian sky, cast long, weak shadows that mirrored the encroaching twilight of my father’s reign. I had spent weeks, months, years, truly, in the hushed sanctuaries of the royal library, poring over scrolls that spoke not of treaties and trade routes, but of siege engines and scorched earth. My tutors, bless their earnest, misguided souls, believed they were shaping me into a beacon of Verian diplomacy, a gentle hand on the reins of power. They mistook my quiet contemplation for studious reflection on matters of state, when in truth, I was tracing the lines of conquest, memorizing the anatomy of subjugation.
The arrival of Envoy Elara from the kingdom of Eldoria had been a gift, a perfectly ripe plum ready to be plucked. My father, King Theron, ever the proponent of peace, had welcomed her with open arms and a glass of the finest Verian wine. I had watched them, my smile a placid mask, while my mind dissected their every word, their every gesture. Elara, with her earnest pronouncements of goodwill and her thinly veiled curiosity about Verian defenses, was a perfect vessel for the discord I intended to sow. A misplaced word, a subtly misinterpreted glance, a strategically “forgotten” detail – these were the tools of my trade, far sharper and more effective than any blade.
It was during the grand banquet, a spectacle of forced cordiality, that I made my move. The air was thick with the scent of roasted game and the cloying sweetness of Eldorian perfume. My father, already frail, sat beside Elara, his cough a persistent, unwelcome punctuation to their conversation. I, seated across the table, observed. I watched as Elara recounted a supposed minor border skirmish from her kingdom’s past, a tale of misplaced aggression from a rogue band of brigands. My father, ever the magnanimous ruler, offered condolences and assurances of Verian neutrality should such an event ever threaten Eldorian soil.
