The King's Shadow
King Theron's health deteriorates, forcing him to lean on Fayette's counsel. He sees a capable heir, blind to the calculating mind beneath the dutiful facade, as she subtly guides his decisions towards vulnerability.
The scent of lavender and sickness clung to the air in my father’s chambers, a cloying perfume that always made my chest tighten. His breaths were shallow, each one a fragile whisper against the opulent silence of the room. I smoothed the silk of my gown, a practiced gesture of concern, and met his gaze. His eyes, once sharp and commanding, were now clouded, rimmed with a weariness that spoke of more than just physical ailment.
“Fayette,” he rasped, his voice a dry rustle. “You are here.”
I inclined my head, a small, demure movement. “Always, Father. Your comfort is my only concern.” It was a lie, of course. My comfort lay in the shadowed corners of the royal library, in the brittle pages of forgotten strategies, in the chilling logic of men who had redrawn maps with steel and iron. But that was a secret I guarded jealously, a jewel hidden deep within the folds of my ambition.
