The artifact pulsed faintly against my palm, a steady thrumming that seemed to resonate not just in my bones, but in the very air around me. It had been a week since I’d first stumbled upon it, a week of furtive glances at the shifting possibilities of tomorrow, each one more unsettling than the last. The weight of it all was a heavy cloak, and I found myself seeking refuge in the quiet corners of my life, the familiar and the mundane. But even there, the hum of the artifact was a constant reminder, a siren song of futures that might be, and futures that were terrifyingly close to being.
It was in one of these quiet corners, a small, forgotten café tucked away on a side street, that I met her. The air inside was thick with the scent of roasted beans and stale pastries, a comforting aroma that usually soothed my frayed nerves. Today, however, it did little to penetrate the fog of my thoughts. I nursed a lukewarm coffee, tracing patterns in the condensation on the glass, when a voice, clear and precise, cut through the ambient noise.
“You’re Kaelen, aren’t you?”
