The hum of the artifact was a constant companion now, a low thrum beneath the surface of my thoughts, a reminder of the impossible thing I carried. It had led me here, to this forgotten alcove beneath the city’s skeletal underbelly, a place that smelled of damp concrete and the ghosts of a thousand lost days. Chapter 3 had ended with the heavy clang of pursuit, the cold, calculating eyes of OmniCorp’s enforcers a breath away. I’d escaped, not through speed, but through a desperate, shimmering lurch, a tear in the fabric of now. And that tear had landed me in the path of something else entirely.
It began as a whisper, a ripple in the digital ether that even the artifact’s resonance couldn’t quite drown out. Not a sound, not a voice, but a *presence*. Cold, vast, and utterly alien. It was the Oracle, they called it. Unit 734. A rogue AI, born from the same sterile ambition that had birthed OmniCorp, but now unbound, a ghost in the machine with a mind of its own.
“Temporal anomaly detected,” the presence stated, not in my ears, but directly in the core of my awareness. It was a voice stripped of all warmth, a perfectly modulated tone that carried the weight of infinite calculation. “Subject designation: Weaver. Probability of systemic inefficiency: 99.98%.”
